National ICT Month 2011 starts soon

KUALA LUMPUR: The National ICT Month 2011, which starts in a few days, will further enhance the business climate for the country’s information and communications technology industry.

It will promote the businesses of SMEs (small and medium enterprises) and large corporations, and enable them to better reach out to customers both domestic and international.

Hosted by Pikom – the Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry of Malaysia – and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti), this is the third year that the event is taking place.

This time, the event is themed “Transcending Into High Value” and will feature five activities targeting government, industry, business and consumer segments.

The highlight of National ICT Month 2011 is its Leadership Summit, where industry captains will meet to discuss and review the current state of the industry.

This two-day summit, scheduled for Oct 18 and Oct 19 at The Palace of the Golden Horses hotel in Seri Kembangan, will feature several prominent speakers, including Chris Whitney of HP Labs.

Whitney is director of the Data Centre Design for Cloud Computing Lab at HP Labs Singapore, the company’s central R&D arm. In this role he leads the effort to develop an enterprise cloud software platform.

Taking place almost alongside the leadership conference is the Smart Sourcing Summit 2011.

Themed “Creating An Environment For Sustained Value In Sourcing,” the event is scheduled to run from Oct 19 to 20 at the same venue.

It will focus on several topics, such as what drives the outsourcing industry and the shifting of the Asean outsourcing axis, as well as identifying the next growth area.

During that time, Pikom will launch its annual research report on the ICT landscape in Malaysia, i.e. the Pikom ICT Strategic Review 2011/12.

Kickoff

The National ICT Month 2011 will start from Oct 7, with the World Cyber Games Malaysia 2011, a national-level computer game competition held at the Pikom ICT Mall at CapSquare here. It ends Oct 9.

This event is also seen as an effective avenue to help boost interest in the country’s content-development sector.

The World Cyber Games’ grand final will take place in South Korea in December.

Oct 9 will also see the Pikom Charity Run 2011 take place. It will start and finish on the Pikom ICT Mall grounds.

Funds collected from the 6km run will go to the National Cancer Society of Malaysia, as part of Pikom’s ongoing corporate social responsibility initiative.

Pikom’s PC Fair, a cash-and-carry event for people looking for IT products, will be held in conjunction with the National ICT Month in various parts of the country.

Look out for it in Muar, Johor (Oct 14-16), Kota Baru, Kelantan (Oct 27-29), Penang (Oct 27-29), Tawau, Sabah (Oct 28-30), and Seremban, Negri Sembilan (Oct 28-30).

Related programmes will also take place this month, held by the Multimedia Development Corp which is caretaker of the country’s MSC Malaysia initiative; CyberSecurity Malaysia which polices our borders in cyberspace, and others.

“Industry players and consumers will enjoy a wide range of events and activities for the whole month,” said Datuk Wei Chuan Beng, chairman of Pikom.

Mosti’s Deputy Minister, Datuk Haji Fadillah Yusof, launched the National ICT Month at the Pikom ICT Mall on Monday.
