BANGI, Sept 20 (Bernama) — The Strategic Plan for the Development of the Orang Asli 2011-2015, which was launched today, is proof of the government’s assurance on including the Orang Asli in the mainstream of development in line with the rapid growth of the country.
The plan represented a revised approach and strategy which had been strengthened based on six main thrusts including widening access to infrastructure in the Orang Asli settlements, mobilisation of economic activities and raising the quality of life for the Orang Asli community.
Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said since there was a four-fold increase in the Orang Asli population, a more dynamic development plan was necessary.
He told reporters after the launching ceremony that the plan also focused on the development of human capital including proper education for the Orang Asli community.
In this context, six Orang Asli students would be sent abroad to continue their studies in the fields of medicine, engineering and accounting.
On the improvement of infrastructure, he said that for the third quarter of this year, an additional allocation of RM9 million was provided for the construction of 99 units of new houses and repairs on 564 units of houses.
